Lessons and Carols

Lessons and Carols services have scandalous origins! Well into the late 1800s, Christmas carols weren’t part of worship; they were mostly sung by carollers visiting homes. It wasn’t until 1878 that carols were part of Christmas services at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London! In 1880, the Bishop of Truro was concerned about how much alcohol was being drunk during December. He wanted to attract folk out of the pubs, and into Church. A combination of short readings from Scripture together with carols was seen as just the thing, and the service spread from there.

This year, our service of Lessons & Carols uses a pattern of readings from the Church of England that is focused on the coming King and his kingdom, as we wait for Jesus and long for the rule of the Prince of Peace over all the earth.
